Hi, I’m Charu Malik. A simple girl, born and brought up in Delhi, with my most recent years spent in Mumbai. As with most of us, I completed my Masters and joined the corporate rat race. Projects, promotions, pay checks. One job after another, one boss after another, one deadline after another. Non-stop for 19 years. Who I am, came to be defined by my job. I started to find my worth in my work.
Until one day, earlier this year, when a personal tragedy hit my family, and deeply impacted me. It made me realize that life is too short – we need to live each moment, we need to be grateful for every breath we take, and we need to make the most of what we have. Hold on tight to people, to experiences, to memories, rather than to things!
In a leap of faith, I decided to take a career break – pause – take the time to relax, recharge, and reboot. I’m happy that I could realize and acknowledge that I want to do this, and at the same time, grateful to my family who whole-heartedly supported my decision.
So, I set out to pursue what I enjoy the most, i.e., TRAVEL, especially with my loved ones. I think it’s the best way to spend great quality time with another person – be it your parent, your sibling or your best friend, away from the everyday hustle-bustle and routine.
In 2017, I had started this travel blog and wrote about few of my trips, but the pressures of corporate life took over and I couldn’t continue that voyage. It’s now time to pick that up again.
Professionally, I am a researcher and a data lover. And naturally, those became my behavioral traits in my personal life too. Some time back, I was reading a report by Google and Bain, titled ‘How Does India Travel’, which reveals that online channels influence customer decision making across the purchase journey. Infact, more than 86% of consumers with Internet access are influenced by online channels in the 3 key phases of their travel: interest, research and experience. I can vouch for this, because I research alot for my trips. However, when I read blogs or hear podcasts, what I typically find is that everyone talks only about the good things or the positive highlights about a destination. What I am trying to do is provide a holistic view – both good and bad. In addition to what are the must do’s, what are perhaps things that can be skipped in your itinerary; what are the potential pain points or key considerations to keep in mind – e.g., limited options in vegetarian food or too much road travel or need for local taxis or poor service at a hotel and rooms with not a great view. I believe these points can help you decide whether a particular destination is for you or not or once you’ve decided the destination, these points will help you plan and prepare better, so they are no or minimal surprises.
You may find my kind of travel to be slightly premium (as against budget travel). I look for nice comfortable hotels to stay in that offer little bit of luxury, privacy and safety (as against dorms/hostels) and I research for restaurants that don’t only have great food but also a pleasant ambience to enjoy (as against quick street side food options).
I feel what I enjoy doing should define who I am. I’d like to find my worth in my travel and my sharing. Hence, in addition to this blog, I have started a podcast called ‘DestinationDialoguesbyCharu’ and I have an Instagram handle by the same name. I have enjoyed recording my podcast and penning this blog and I hope you enjoy listening and reading just as much. Please subscribe, like, share, and promote if you do! Thank you!
